East Africa

This consists of Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan and Kenya. In the second half of the 19th Century only the coast of Africa was well known to Europeans. Cardinal Lavigerie sent the first Missionaries of Africa towards the interior of the continent via the Sahara in the North towards Timbouctou. These caravans were wiped out, so he sent more groups via East Africa. These Missionaries were welcomed on the Swahili Coast by Holy Ghost Fathers who had missions there, then they continued on through what is now Tanzania to, what is now, Uganda and Burundi-Rwanda and eventually Congo. The first Missionaries of Africa converts in Uganda were persecuted and some became the Martyrs of Uganda. The Missionaries of Africa came late to Kenya and Sudan. After South Sudan became an independent country, one confrere began working there as part of an inter congregational initiative. In 2021 a new community was founded for the parish of Jonglei in Malakal Diocese.
