Gerry died at the age of 78. after 55 years as a missionary. He was a lecturer in Ethiopia and Mozambique, a formator of the First Cycle (Philosophy) in London and a member of the General Council in Rome at various times in his career.
In recent years he suffered from ill health and was confined to a wheelchair in Little Ealing Lane community, Ealing. However “confined” is a very misleading term. He was very active on the internet from his room and physically he travelled to various parts of Europe on holidays.
He was always present for meals and prayer in community, but eventually he needed more care than the confreres and staff in Ealing could provide, so he returned to his native Scotland where he died suddenly in a nursing home in Govan. He had spoken to friends and relatives earlier in the day, but a short time later was found dead from a sudden heart attack.
